In this open-ended 3-day workshop we’ll be covering multiple techniques of working with clay without a wheel. Pinching, coiling, stiff slabs and soft slabs, poking, cutting, slashing and stretching. There’s something different that can be done with clay at every stage of wetness to dryness. We won’t be able to get to all of them, but we’re going to try!

First two days are for clay work. Your finished pieces will be bisque fired & ready to glaze the following Saturday.

No prior experience with clay is necessary. This class is great for beginners & intermediate makers alike

25 LBs of white stoneware clay will be provided per person- extra clay may be purchased at cost as needed.

Join us for an immersive, hands-on ceramics experience where you’ll create and finish your own handcrafted raku pottery pieces in two sessions.

Part 1: Hand-Building Simple Canisters

In the first session, you’ll learn the fundamentals of hand-building as you design and shape your own simple clay canisters. This session is perfect for beginners and experienced makers alike—no wheel required. By the end, your canister will be carefully prepared for drying and bisque firing before our second session.

Part 2: Glazing & Raku Firing

In the second session, your bisque-fired canisters will be ready for glazing. You will apply raku glazes, learn about masking and taping to create patterns. Then we’ll fire the pieces in a raku kiln, removing them while red-hot and placing them into reduction chambers to create the signature crackle patterns and metallic effects inspired by the centuries-old Japanese raku tradition.

After cooling and cleaning, you’ll reveal the unique surface results—and take your finished canister home the same day.

Beginner & intermediate friendly. All materials provided in the enrollment fee.
